I love it when boy and I have a quiet day at home, being together happily doing our own thing. He regularly comes to tell me all about what he is up to and to check what I’m doing, in case it’s of any interest to him – like I’m baking a cake or something…

Today is a quiet day. I keep a hot water bottle against my back, as I sit and paint and sip on a cup of tea. While the watercolour paint is drying I knit a bit more of my fern shawl.

Winter Twilight

You know, this particular moment between night and dawn…

The Chronicles Of Yarnia…

“When you are knittings socks and sweaters and scarves, you aren’t just knitting.  You are assigning a value to human effort. You are holding back time. You are preserving the simple unchanging act of handwork.”

– Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit’s End.

My soul often has the urge to go wandering in nature. To feed on the sights of the valleys and woodlands that form Ashdown Forest. The peaceful sounds of the streams running free, the grounding presence of the trees, the smell of gorse flowers, the touch of moss, the shades of wet leaves, the sight of all the wild animals…

From the Bird Hide…

Boy and I went birdwatching with some friends today and we were very lucky. As Boy and his friend were busy looking for large branches of trees to throw in the water, I stayed in the bird hide with my binoculars and I got to see ducks, crows, Canadian geese, a cormorant, a heron in flight, landing on the water, a kingfisher, a blue-tit and an Iceland gull… It was fantastic!

Tree Portraits

During my daily stroll in the woods this morning, everything was wet and very muddy.

The streams were running very fast, the ferns, the tree trunks, the mushrooms and even the moss look all glossy and wet. So wet…

I decided to photograph portraits of some of the trees I walked amongst, to capture how they look when wet… All the photos were taken during this morning’s walk. I hope you’ll get to feel the atmosphere of this wet, windy, wonderful, whimsical, woodland, wordless walk… (Any more w words?).

I love clouds. All of them. Altocumulus, Cumulus, Cumulonimbus, Stratocumulus…

The patience of Moominmamma

moomin mama knitting

Since being a mother I do often feel like I’m Moominmamma, with my knitting always at the ready in my bag, along with Boy’s survival kit: Rescue remedy, a spare pair of woolly socks, a pen knife, a palm drill, a half finished pom-pom, notebooks and pencils for drawing on the go, string, magnifying glasses… And all the things collected in the woods every day: shiny golden bottle tops, twigs and small sticks, pretty leaves, stones, bones, moss and pine cones…

And the patience. To wait. To listen. To be still. Even when a storm of wild, loud chaos unfolds.

Around The Corner

There is a corner in November – this year it was two Thursdays ago – when all of a sudden the temperature dropped and there was a very distinctive nip in the air.
